When to Use TOON Instead of JSON for AI Payloads
The main reason to test TOON in an AI workflow is simple: it can reduce token count. When a payload repeats the same keys across many rows, TOON can remove that repetition, which can lower prompt cost and leave more room in the context window for instructions, evidence, or output.
Where TOON usually gets smaller
TOON is most effective when the payload contains repeated arrays of objects with the same keys. JSON repeats the field names on every row. TOON can lift those keys once and then store the rows more compactly, which is exactly how it often cuts token count in LLM-facing payloads.

Where JSON still wins
JSON is still the better default when interoperability matters more than token savings. If the data needs to move through APIs, logs, validators, schema tooling, or debugging workflows, JSON stays easier to inspect and easier to hand off.
It also stays safer when the structure is irregular. Deeply nested objects, one-off fields, and shape changes across rows reduce the benefit of TOON quickly. In those cases you often pay the cognitive cost of an extra format without gaining much in size.
